Data centers are not cleanrooms, but the industry borrowed the cleanroom standard to answer a question it could not answer on its own: how clean is clean enough? ISO 14644-1 gives that answer a number, and once a room has a number, cleaning stops being a matter of opinion and becomes something you can measure, verify, and hold a vendor to.
What the classes actually measure
ISO 14644-1 classifies air cleanliness by the concentration of airborne particles, counted per cubic meter and broken out by particle size. The scale runs from ISO Class 1 (the cleanest, near-vacuum particle counts used in semiconductor fabrication) to ISO Class 9 (roughly ordinary room air). A lower number is a cleaner room. The class is a ceiling on how many particles of a given size are allowed to be floating in a cubic meter of the room’s air.
Which class a data center targets
Most operating data halls target the range of ISO Class 7 to Class 8. That is far cleaner than a typical office and clean enough that settled particulate does not bridge connectors, foul optics, or accelerate wear on moving parts in fans and drives — without the cost and discipline of a true semiconductor cleanroom. Air cleanliness is not surface cleanliness
A room can pass an airborne particle count and still have contaminated surfaces, and the reverse is also true. ISO 14644 has separate parts for surfaces, and in practice a data center program has to address both: the air the equipment breathes and the horizontal surfaces where particulate settles and gets re-disturbed by traffic. A deep cleaning that only wipes visible surfaces without verifying the air path is measuring the wrong thing.
How a room is verified to a class
Verification is a particle count taken with a calibrated counter, at defined locations, under defined operating conditions, documented against the target class. This matters most at two moments. The first is commissioning cleaning, when a finished construction site has to be proven clean to its class before power-on. The second is ongoing: a room drifts out of class over time, and periodic counts are how you catch the drift before it reaches the equipment.
Why the documentation is the deliverable
For an audit or an insurer, the cleaning is not the deliverable — the record is. A witnessed particle count tied to the target class, dated and located, is what proves the room held its standard. Cleaning without that record is unverifiable, which for a regulated or contractually-committed facility is the same as not having done it.
The takeaway
ISO 14644 turns “the room looks clean” into “the room is Class 8, verified on this date, at these points.” For a data center that is the difference between a defensible cleanliness program and a hope. Set the target class, verify against it at commissioning, and re-verify on a cadence — and the standard does the rest of the work of keeping everyone honest.
