The space under your access floor is the part of the room nobody sees and the part that decides how clean the air actually is. In a downflow design the subfloor is the supply-air plenum: the air your CRAC units push into it comes straight up through the perforated tiles and into your equipment. Subfloor plenum cleaning is the difference between cooling your racks with clean air and cooling them with whatever has collected under the floor since the room was built.

And a lot collects down there. Cable slack, zip-tie tails, drywall dust from construction, metal shavings from tile cuts, and the whiskers that grow off plated surfaces over time. Those metal whiskers are not a minor housekeeping issue; NASA has documented tin and zinc whiskers bridging conductors and shorting live circuits.
