Foreign object detection is a documented FOD sweep of floors, trays, and containment for conductive parts, because a loose shaving can short live gear.

Cleaning removes what settles. Foreign object detection removes what kills equipment. A metal shaving, a cut wire strand, or a dropped blade tip is a conductive object sitting where voltage will eventually be, and one of them bridging the wrong gap is a short waiting to happen. That's why FOD is run as its own step, not folded into a general wipe-down where a small conductor is easy to sweep past on the way to the next surface.

The objects that matter are small and easy to miss. Swarf from cutting strut, copper strands trimmed off a termination, staples, screws, blade tips, and washers all end up on floors, in cable trays, and inside containment. Foreign object detection is a deliberate sweep for exactly these items across every surface where a loose conductor could later cause a fault. Dust you can measure with a counter; a single dropped washer you have to find by looking.

Why foreign object detection is a separate step

A cleaning pass is optimized to remove dust and film. Foreign object detection is optimized to find discrete objects, which is a different task with a different set of eyes. Treat FOD as a byproduct of cleaning and small conductive parts slip through, because a crew focused on wiping surfaces isn't scanning for the one strand of copper in a cable tray. Give it its own sweep, its own checklist, and its own sign-off, and the objects that cause hard faults get caught before power-on instead of after.

Where foreign object detection looks

Foreign object detection covers the floor, but the floor is the easy part. The sweep also reaches the places a part can fall into and stay hidden:

  • Cable trays where trimmed copper strands collect
  • The subfloor plenum where dropped hardware settles out of sight
  • Containment panels, brush grommets, and blanking gaps
  • The tops and bases of cabinets, where parts fall and stay until airflow or vibration moves them

Conductive particles and metal whiskers

Some conductors you can see. Others grow. Tin and zinc whiskers are thin metal filaments that sprout from plated surfaces over time and can bridge conductors on their own; NASA has documented failures traced to them. Foreign object detection accounts for both the obvious loose part and the conditions that let whiskers form, because a conductive filament is the same short as a dropped shaving, just slower to arrive. A room can be spotless and still be seeding a fault years out if the plating and the environment are wrong.

FOD inside the cabinets

The highest-stakes foreign object detection happens inside the gear. A wire strand or blade tip inside a high or low voltage cabinet is inches from live bus, so FOD in high and low voltage cabinets gets extra scrutiny and the discipline energized-ready equipment demands. If parts keep turning up after a cleaning, contamination entry-point inspection traces where they're coming from so you're not finding the same debris every visit.

What a loose conductor actually does

Picture the failure. A copper strand the width of a hair sits across two terminals in a cabinet that's about to be energized. It carries no current at all until the breaker closes, and then it carries exactly enough to arc, pit the contacts, or trip protection nobody expected to trip on day one. A washer that rolls into a bus compartment does the same job with more mass. None of these parts announce themselves; they sit quietly through the whole build and wait for power. The parts are cheap and the fault they cause is not, which is the entire case for treating the sweep as its own step with its own eyes.

A sweep before power-on, then a habit

The sweep before power-on is the big one, but the risk doesn't end at commissioning. Every time a cabinet is opened for a change, a pull, or a repair, there's a fresh chance to drop a screw or trim a strand and leave it behind. So the same discipline carries into the operating life of the room: open a cabinet, work it, check it before you close it. A build that ends clean and then loses that habit is just building the next fault slowly, one open door at a time.

Documented, not assumed
