It is not dead space, it is the path the room's air takes on its way back to the cooling units, which means every particle loose up there is riding the return stream. A dirty return plenum quietly feeds contamination back through the coils it flows across, and because it is sealed above the tiles nobody sees it happen. Cleaning it is the same top-down logic applied to the air's return trip, and it is the reason the overhead work does not stop at the visible grid. Skip it and half the airflow in the room is still moving dirt. The return side gets the same HEPA-filtered capture and the same before-and-after counts as everything else overhead, because contamination in the return is contamination in the room, one loop later.
